The 5th Amendment: Ratified in 1791, this amendment protects anyone on U.S. soil accused of a crime from self-incrimination (“pleading the fifth”) and double jeopardy (being tried twice for the same offense). It also prohibits the government from taking away private property without proper compensation (eminent domain).
